Headline of the Week

Weekly, the Racer X Slack thread is filled with great headlines from newspapers around the globe. So, we’ve decided to make it a weekly feature here on Exhaust.

We regretfully break the first rule of Fight Club to bring you this week's headline. A substitute math teacher was filmed encouraging male students to slap each other at Montville High School in Connecticut, according to the Hartford Courant. Ryan Avery Fish, 23, claimed he wanted to befriend students by encouraging horseplay. He was arrested April 12 and charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, one count of breach of peace, and four counts of second-degree reckless endangerment.

Fish said, according to his warrant, "The truth is I’m an idiot and wanted to befriend them.... I would let them be teenagers and get their energy out. I will admit that I did at one point egg them on.... Boys will be boys."

As usual with these types of incidents, the footage was released online.

No one was seriously injured, although the Hartford Courant states that one student threw up during one fight and another was taken to a hospital for mental evaluation after he showed signs of being traumatized. Fish was fired after the school superintendent was notified of the fights in October, but he was not immediately reported to police.

Students who were interviewed by police said Fish started some fights with a countdown, and footage showed him moving objects out of the way of the brawlers so the fight could continue. Four fights are believed to have occurred, but only two were filmed.
