Harley-Davidson To Debut Electric Model in 2019

As we wrote about on Tuesday, Harley-Davidson, like many motorcycle manufacturers, did not have a good 2017. The company reported this week that its net income fell 82 percent in its fiscal fourth quarter and that U.S. retail sales decreased by 8.5 percent; international sales were down 3.9 percent.

One way H-D will try and generate new sales is through an all-electric motorcycle, which will come to market within 18 months, according to a Bloomberg report. The announcement comes four years after Harley unveiled its LiveWire project (pictured above and below), an all-electric prototype used in The Avengers series.

“You’ve heard us talk about Project LiveWire. It’s an active project we’re preparing to bring to market within 18 months,” Matt Levatich, the president and chief executive officer of Harley-Davidson, said, according to Bloomberg.

Specs of the new model have not been announced. When Harley debuted LiveWire, the bike was able to go from 0-60 mph in under four seconds. That’s the good news. The bad? It was limited to just 55 miles of range in “economy” mode.

We’ll see if Harley, which built its image on the loud, outlaw-style rumble of its engine, is able to turn around sales with an electric model.
