Honda Turns A Ridgeline Pickup Into A Side-by-Side

Is this Steve Matthes' dream machine?

We know side-by-side vehicles keep getting larger and more powerful, but no one was expecting a concept vehicle based on an actual street-legal pickup truck. But Honda unveiled such a machine at the SEMA show today. Dubbed the Honda Rugged Open Air Vehicle, this is a Ridgeline pickup... deep down inside, but the body has been stripped and replaced with panels and a roll cage to look like the Pioneer 1000 side-by-side off-road machine. It also gets the Pioneer steering wheel and four bucket seats out of Honda's Civic Type R fast car, but covered in waterproof fabric. Somehow, it fits production Pioneer doors, but the hood and bed are custom designed. Obviously.

Just to give you an idea, Honda says a Pioneer 1000 side-by-side is 116 inches long, 63 inches wide and weighs 1709 pounds. A Ridgeline pickup is 201 inches long, 78.6 inches wide and weighs 4400 pounds. The Pioneer side-by-side uses a 999cc two-cylinder engine. The Ridgeline uses a 3500cc V-6.

We don't think Honda has plans to put this vehicle into production and we also don't have any idea why they built this concept. Now we're left to wonder: could they build a side-by-side big enough to actually carry another side-by-side? We're getting close.
